As Brian Fenton brings the curtain down on a remarkable career, here are some of the numbers behind his glorious spell at the heart of the Dublin team.

0 - Never did Fenton suffer defeat in the Leinster Championship in 29 starts.

2 - The number of Footballer of the Year awards that Fenton has, placing him alongside Trevor Giles, David Clifford, Jack O’Shea, Jimmy Keaveney and James McCartan Snr as the only players to have won the prize, in its various iterations, more than once.

3 - That’s how many times Fenton finished on the losing side in Championship football, with the All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Mayo in 2021 his first loss in his seventh season. The others came against Kerry in 2022 and Galway this year.

4 - League titles, though the 2021 crown was shared with Kerry.

6 - His All Star haul. Stephen Cluxton (seven) is the only Dublin player with more.

7 - The number of All-Ireland senior medals that Fenton won. Only 16 players in the history of the game have won more - 11 of them former Dublin teammates of his.

8 - Well, you couldn’t put any other number on his back, could you?

10 - How many seasons he played with Dublin. It’s also his tally of Leinster medals, albeit a very much diminished currency these days.

31 - Fenton’s age as he bows out somewhat prematurely, but Brian Mullins, with whom he is often compared, was the same age when he finished in 1985. Kerry great Jack O’Shea, another who is mentioned in the same breath, played until he was 34.

43 - That’s how many Championship games Fenton played for Dublin before finally tasting defeat against Mayo in 2021. It would be 45 but for the fact that Jim Gavin rested him on two occasions.

64 - The number of Championship games that Fenton played for Dublin.

84 - Or 4-72, if you like. That’s what Fenton scored across his 64 Championship games, an average of 1.3 points per game.

1993 - The year that Fenton was born. He was one of a decorated Dublin quintet that came into the world in that year, ‘The Class of ‘93’, along with Ciaran Kilkenny, John Small, Paul Mannion and Jack McCaffrey.

Between them they won 35 All-Irelands. Mannion and McCaffrey have left before, but Fenton is the first to break that chain for good.

Who will follow him before the winter is out?
