Drogheda United boost as owners swoop for top Danish club
Kevin Doherty's Drogheda United could benefit from player exchanges with Danish side Silkeborg
Drogheda United’s owners are poised to secure a majority share in Danish club Silkeborg.
And Kevin Doherty’s team stands to benefit from player exchanges, similar to the deal that saw Walsall’s Douglas James-Taylor thrive in the League of Ireland this season.
The Trivela group that owns Drogheda United and Walsall also took over a grassroots club in Togo in the past year. But agreement has now been reached with Danish top flight side Silkeborg IF, to acquire 80 per cent of the club.

Shareholders at Silkeborg - who are fourth in the Superliga - will vote on the proposal at an EGM in December, with the move expected to be completed. And that promises to stand to Drogheda, with Trivela chiefs explaining how their Silkeborg swoop will stand to the Boynesiders and Walsall.
Drogheda United co-chair,mam and Trivela managing director Benjamin Boycott, said: “I’ve always said to our supporters in Walsall and Drogheda, if and when we acquire more clubs, it will have to be of benefit to all parties.

"I hope that our supporters can see and feel the shared benefits thus far, with player collaboration on the likes of Evan Weir and Douglas James Taylor.
“We believe that these benefits will be felt even more as we add Silkeborg to the Trivela family, with the potential for mutually-beneficial player movement between clubs, potential technical and administrative staff career advancement and development opportunities inside the group and shared commercial sponsorship deals.”
Boycott continued: “I’m pleased with Trivela’s potential move into Denmark, with the proposed acquisition. The management at Silkeborg has done an outstanding job running a competitive and profitable club these past years. The club is financially successful, debt free, and experiencing good sporting success of late as well.”
