Gary Neville hits back at ex-Salford star's claim over brutal exit from club - 'Never happened'
Gary Neville, the majority owner of Salford City, has had to address claims he told one of his former players they'd never play for his club again after a frank conversation
Gary Neville has rejected an account from ex- Salford City player Jordan Hulme, who claims he was told he would "never play for them again".
Hulme left the Ammies in 2017 when they were still a non-league outfit, but just as Neville and co had decided to take the club full-time. Several players were looking to secure their futures as professional players, but Hulme wasn't part of their long-term plans.
Hulme himself was looking to see where he stood in the owners' plans and wanted assurances that he could try and prove himself at Moor Lane, but has claims Neville told him that his time at the club was up and he would never wear the red of Salford again.
He told the I Had Trials Once podcast : "So I rang Gary Neville to say like 'don't. If you tell me I can stay and fight for my place, I will train every day. I am not bothered if I am not in the squad for the first few, but if you tell me there is a slight chance, then I'll stay'. He was like 'there's no chance. You are not playing for us again'."
Quizzed on whether he got a payout he added: "Yeah I did, what did I have? A £60,000 contract. And I am like, let's take £40k off the b*****s. So I went in and came out with £8k."
Hulme then claimed that the Class of 92, who had purchased the club, were able to use his contract against him and he was forced out the door.
The ex-Salford player went on to say: "He was saying, because I signed a s**t contract. They were saying 'We know what you're on. Do you think we are a***d about paying someone £450 a week sit in the stands. That's fine you can sit there.' So that was their get out thing."
Neville and his former Manchester United team-mates have overseen several promotions through the non-league and managed to secure their place in the Football League back in 2019. Since then they've remained in League Two.
The Sky Sports pundit has addressed the claimed on social media and maintained that the conversation "never happened at all but sounds great".
Hulme then appeared to suggest his words were misconstrued and corroborated Neville's story that his conversation was actually with the club's former joint managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley.
Johnson and Morley then offered their own account of the story, both confirming they had held the difficult conversation with the player - not Neville.
Johnson wrote on X: "Nope, it was me and Bernard Morley that sat down with Jordan, not Gary. Although, I can also confirm it was Gary Neville that sacked us, the ruthless, horrible sod!" Morely added: "Gary, if Jordan said it was raining outside, I’d go and check. As good as lad and footballer he is, I think he’s got his wires crossed with this."
