Marcus Rashford gives three-word verdict on Ruben Amorim's first Man Utd training session
Manchester United are without a host of their international stars but Ruben Amorim was still able to put on an impressive training session with Marcus Rashford impressed
Marcus Rashford offered a glowing verdict after Ruben Amorim's first session in charge of Manchester United.
The Portuguese boss officially began work last week having arrived from Sporting Lisbon, but a host of his players were away on international duty. Several are still missing but a cluster of players went through their paces at Carrington on Monday.
Only 10 first team squad members were available for Monday's session, but numbers were supplemented by several academy stars. Nevertheless there was still some serious quality on show with Rashford joined by Kobbie Mainoo, who continues to edge towards full fitness.
Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez were all present with Yoro yet to play competitively for the club since he signed in the summer from Lille. Rashford was clearly impressed with the training put on by his new boss as he said on social media: "Top session today".
Amorim's first game in charge will come this Sunday at Portman Road with the Red Devils taking on Ipswich Town. The Portuguese coach arrives having marked himself out as one of the most exciting young coaches in Europe.
With Sporting he was a two-time league winner whilst he also led them to several other domestic titles. Amorim's style of play has furthered his attraction and the 39-year-old made it clear that his immediate priority is to get across how he wants the team to play.
He told the club's website: “We know that we need time, but we have to win time. To win time is to win games. But the most important thing for me is identity. So since day one we will start with our identity.
"Of course we are going to prepare the games, but we will focus a lot in our game model. How to play, how to press, these small things, small details. You cannot go 100% on every detail because it will be confusing for the players. So if I have to say one thing, my main goal, my first goal, is identity.”
Amorim may only have two full training sessions with his entire squad before he makes his managerial debut in England. There is huge anticipation ahead of his opening outfit and the new manager insists his philosophy will be evident. "You will see an idea. This I can guarantee," he said.
The biggest challenge for the Manchester outift, who have endured their worst ever start to a Premier League season, will be adjusting to playing with three at the back. Amorim is likely to use three centre-halves within his system and employ wing-backs.
The unique system has rarely been used in England. Its biggest success story was during Antonio Conte's Chelsea spell, but many of the players at Old Trafford won't have played that formation for a prolonged period during their careers.
