Tributes paid to young footballer killed in Kerry road crash

Tributes have been paid to this talented young footballer who died in an early morning road crash at the weekend.
Sean Scanlon, who was in his 20s and worked as a plumber, died when the van he was driving crashed near his native Ballinskelligs in Co Kerry early on Sunday morning – and locals say the entire community has been left devastated by his death. Mr Scanlon was a leading member of the St. Michaels Foilmore GAA Club in the area.
Club secretary Eugene O’Sullivan told The Mirror on Monday: “He was the heartbeat of our club. He lived for his football, his family and his community. We are bereft at the sudden passing of our friend and comrade. The rain that is falling here in Ballinskelligs is only hiding our tears for Sean.”

And the club also paid a moving tribute to Mr Scanlon on its Facebook page.
It said: “St. Michaels Foilmore GAA Club is in mourning at the untimely death of our player, friend, and colleague Sean Scanlon. Sean’s passing has devastated all our club members and has cast a gloom over Ballinskelligs and Foilmore. Our thoughts and prayers are with his Mom Liz, Sister Ellie, Brothers Daragh, Calum and Mikey, Nannie Eileen, Aunties, Clare, Bernie and the extended Doyle and Scanlon families. Taken from us too soon Seán. May your gentle soul rest In eternal peace.”
The Kerry Beagle Association also paid tribute to him.
Con O’Leary said: “Kerry Beagle Association would like to express sincere Sympathy to the Scanlon and Doyle families on the passing of Sean Scanlon Rip at a very young age Condolences to his Mother Liz , Sister Ellie, Brothers Daragh, Calum and Mickey, May he rest in peace amen.”
Mr Scanlon was seriously injured in the single vehicle crash at Kilurly close to Ballinskelligs at around 2am on Sunday. Mr Scanlon was the driver of the van. He was taken to University Hospital Kerry, where he later died. Two other men in the van were assessed at the scene, but did not need to be taken to hospital. A Garda statement appealed for witnesses to come forward.
It said: “Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses to this collision to come forward. Additionally, any road users with dash-cam footage from the area at the time of the incident are asked to contact investigating Gardaí. Anyone with information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station 064 6671160, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
Mr Scanlon was one of three men who died on Irish roads at the weekend. A man in his 40s died on Saturday following a crash on the Rahan Road outside Tullamore in Co Offaly on Thursday And on Friday, Brandon O’Connell, who was in his 20s, died in a crash near Mallow in County Cork.
