A large-scale search operation for a missing Galway woman has entered its second day.

Concerns for the woman, aged in her 30s, were raised on Tuesday afternoon when she failed to show up for work. Known for her daily morning swims, the search intensified after her car was located at Silverstrand Beach in Barna, a well-known coastal area west of Galway city.

The search has involved a major effort from multiple agencies and volunteers. In an update this morning, a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardai - with the assistance of our colleagues in the Irish Coastguard, RNLI, Civil Defence and a number of local search resources - resumed the search for the missing woman at Silver Strand at first light this morning, Thursday 14th November. The Irish Naval Service will be joining the search today.

"An Garda Síochána continue to provide our support to the loved ones of the missing young woman, and would like to thank the community in Galway, the local community in particular, for their care and assistance over the past 48 hours."

Local volunteers have deployed kayaks and are tirelessly scanning the coastline and beyond in hopes of locating the woman.

A post on social media last night read: "We are all so appreciative of the time spent on this sad task - kayaks and smaller vessels getting right up to the shore, and larger boats further out - and for those who have opened up premises and community spaces to feed the volunteers. It has been a fantastic effort by the local community and beyond, and we are so hopeful that there will be a result before nightfall."

This follows the recovery of a man’s body from the same area on Tuesday after he did not return from a swim at Silverstrand. The man was later identified as celebrated singer-songwriter Johnny Duhan, known for writing The Voyage, famously recorded by Christy Moore. Mr Duhan’s death notice stated that he died during his daily swim in Galway Bay, and is survived by his wife, five children, ten grandchildren and extended family.

While gardai were present at the scene of Mr Duhan’s recovery, they were alerted to a second incident involving the missing woman. The search, involving the Coast Guard, RNLI and local volunteers, continues.
