Ireland is braced for it's first taste of winter, with a blast of freezing Arctic air heading our way.

Met Eireann has confirmed that snow is possible, while weather charts show temperatures dropping as low as -7C in parts.

Recent weeks have seen unusually mild temperatures for the time of year, but that will all change this weekend.

The weather agency's latest forecast paints a chilling picture for next week, with low pressure centered to the east set to dominate Ireland's weather pattern. This will draw in freezing air from the north, bringing what Met Eireann describes as an “Arctic maritime regime” to the country. As a result, Ireland will experience a blast of icy winds and a high risk of wintry showers, including snow, sleet and hail.

Warning what is to come, the national forecaster said: "From Monday, November 18 to Sunday, November 24 colder than average temperatures with low pressure centred to the east dominating. Arctic maritime regime indicated with potential for wintry hazards including hail, sleet and snow. Rainfall amounts above average, especially near coasts, indicative of shower activity."

Weather models, which are notoriously subject to change, show wintry falls arriving in the northwest overnight on Sunday and crossing the country throughout next week. They currently pinpoint this day next week (Thursday, November 21) as a day when the entire country could be blanketed, with temperatures possibly dipping as low as -7C during the early hours of Friday morning.

Highest temperatures of 11C to 13C with light to moderate southwesterly winds, freshening in the northwest later. Outbreaks of rain will move southeast across the country on Friday night and it will become dry with some clear spells in Ulster and Connacht later. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 10C with light to moderate southwesterly winds, becoming northwesterly as the rain clears.
