Inside Ruben Amorim's first day at Man Utd as new boss immediately makes huge decision
Ruben Amorim has officially taken charge of Manchester United and decided that Ruud van Nistelrooy will not be part of his backroom staff along with three other incumbent first-team coaches
Ruben Amorim began work at Manchester United yesterday - with club legend Ruud van Nisterlooy the most high-profile victim of his arrival.
Van Nistelrooy, who took interim charge of United following Erik ten Hag's sacking, was told by Amorim he would not be part of his coaching team and has left the club. Former United striker Van Nistelrooy was in charge for four matches, winning three and drawing one, but has now left, with Amorim bringing his backroom staff from Sporting Lisbon with him.
United released a statement which read: "Manchester United can confirm that Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club. Ruud rejoined in the summer and has taken charge of the team for the past four matches as interim head coach. Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend.
"We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford. Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have also departed and we wish them all well for the future. We will confirm the full men's first-team coaching composition in due course."
Amorim's private jet landed in Manchester at 1:45pm and the new United boss was whisked away - with a police escort - to the club's Carrington training complex. Amorim was accompanied by his coaching staff - Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Paulo Barreira, Emanuel Ferro, and Jorge Vital – and all were given a tour of United's training base.
The 39-year-old Amorim cannot officially start work and take training until his work visa is granted, with United confident that it will be approved within the coming days. Speaking about his new role at United, Amorim said: "I feel ready for the new challenge. I'm not naive, I know it's going to be very different - very difficult. I'm not under any illusions. But it's what it has to be.

"I'm at peace now, I can focus on my new job and I'm looking forward to starting. I know it will be difficult to reproduce what I have here anywhere else, but there are other places with different exposure and pressure. I won't become a different person. I know I’ll be fine. Whether it's three months or 10 years, I know I'll be fine. I'm fully aware of what's important in life.
"Whatever comes, will come. I really want to win. I’ll be in a better mood if I win, more upset if I lose. I certainly won't lose my essence - I'd sooner lose my coaching career. I'm sorry for this decision in the middle of the season, but I felt it was my time and my path. I need to be fully committed."
Amorim was asked whether he would be looking to bring with him Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has 23 goals already this season, to underline his status as one of Europe's most prolific forwards. "We can't go somewhere and try to replicate what happened here," said Amorim. "The leagues are different and I don't know what the team needs more. I don't know what's going to happen."
