Taoiseach Simon Harris’ housing policy launch suffered a faux pas as his “new energy” sign fell to the floor while he stressed his party’s commitment to housing.

Mr Harris has been using the slogan “new energy” to describe his tenure since he took on the Fine Gael leadership role in April.

On Monday morning, the party launched its new housing policy as part of its general election offering.

It promises to deliver 300,000 over a five-year government term, expand the First Home scheme to first-time buyers of second-hand homes, and increase the Help to Buy scheme to €40,000.

During the launch, the Irish Mirror asked Mr Harris why anyone should believe this policy was worthwhile when his party has been in Government for 14 years and people still feel housing is out of their reach.

He spoke on a podium that had a sign with “a new energy” glued on to the front.

The Taoiseach said: “Housing is the biggest priority. What I'm saying to people now is we have a credible way forward. What I'm saying to people now is we're going to do more.”

Seconds after Mr Harris said that housing was the biggest priority, the “new energy” sign came flying off the front of the podium.

“I don’t know what fell there,” he said.

The Irish Mirror responded: “It is your new energy.”
