A garda was injured in a hit-and-run incident this morning when his unmarked patrol car was struck by another vehicle, the occupants of which then fled the scene on foot.

The incident occurred on the N72 in Mallow, Co Cork shortly before 10am while gardaí and emergency services were attending the scene of a serious traffic collision.

A passing car struck the unmarked vehicle, resulting in injuries to the male garda, who was the sole occupant of the Garda car at the time of the collision. He was transported to Cork University Hospital by ambulance but has since been discharged.

The occupants of the other vehicle involved in the hit-and-run incident fled the scene on foot, and gardaí are now appealing to witnesses to come forward and assist with the investigation.

“Gardaí at Mallow are appealing for witnesses following a hit-and-run road traffic collision that occurred in Mallow, County Cork, on Saturday, November 9th, 2024,” said a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána.

“Shortly before 10am, gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a serious traffic collision on the N72 at Spa Glen, Mallow. A Garda car (unmarked) was struck by a passing car, resulting in injuries to the sole occupant, a male Garda in his 40s.

“The occupants of the other vehicle fled the scene on foot and the driver has yet to come forward,” they added.

“Investigating gardaí have conducted a technical examination of the scene and both cars involved, and the road has since fully reopened to traffic.

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward. In addition, road users who may have dash-cam footage from the area at the time of the incident are also urged to contact gardaí.”
