Arsenal are considering two ex-players as their next sporting director - with Per Mertesacker among them.

The Gunners were dealt the shock news earlier this week that Edu was going to leave his role. The Brazilian has been the club's sporting director for a number of years, working impressively with Mikel Arteta as the club become challengers for silverware once more.

Edu has also worked shrewdly in the transfer market, overseeing the club-record signing of Declan Rice. The club are now seeking his successor with the ex-player set to take up a role leading Evangelos Marinakis stable of clubs - which includes Nottingham Forest.

French outlet Foot Mercato reports that two ex-players have been lined up for the vacancy. One of those is Mertesacker, who is currently the club's academy manager. The other is Czech Tomas Rosicky, who is currently the sporting director of Sparta Prague.

Jason Ayto has temporarily stepped in while Arsenal chiefs seek Edu's permanent successor. Those at the Emirates are thought to be open to different options in their search for a new sporting director and aren't determined to employee a former player.

Co-chairman Josh Kroenke does not appear concerned by Edu's exit, thanking him for his work, and insists the changes in personnel are inevitable and the club will evolve - adamant that their next step will highlight their desire to win silverware.

He said: “We respect Edu’s decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward. Everyone at the club wishes him well. We are all so fond of him and the positive energy he brings to everything and everyone.

“Change and evolution is a part of our club. We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition.”

The Brazilian underlined his want to pursue a new venture when he broke his silence. “Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best," he said.
