Roy Keane had a brutal response to a claim about his former teammate Peter Schmeichel.

The Corkman was having dinner with Italian football great Giorgio Chiellini when the legendary defender began to talk about his experience of goalkeepers.

"For Juventus, Del Piero is the greatest. For me, (Gianluigi) Buffon is the greatest character and keeper. All the keepers are crazy, Chiellini said on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet.

"I never met a quiet and normal goalie in my career. I did the Euros with Peter Schmeichel and he's so funny. So funny."

That made Keane interrupt and say; "He's funny as a broken hip," which led to huge laughter from Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Jamie Carragher, who were also in attendance.

Keane and Schmeichel infamously became involved in a row with each other while on a pre-season tour during their time at Old Trafford.

"I had a bust-up with Peter when we were on a pre-season tour of Asia, in 1998," Keane wrote in his autobiography, The Second Half.

"Myself and Nicky Butt had had a night out, and we bumped into Peter at the hotel reception desk. It was about two in the morning. We said a few words to one another - a bit of banter, a bit of stick. I went to Nicky's room ffor some room service, had a sandwich, got up to go - and Peter was waiting for me, outside the room.

"There'd been a little bit of tension between us over the years, for football reasons...I wouldn't say we disliked each other, but we weren't best buddies either."

"He said, 'I've had enough of you. It's time we sorted this out.' So I said, 'Okay.'

"And we had a fight. It felt like ten minutes. There was a lot of noise - Peter's a big lad."

Schmeichel also addressed the argument when appearing on The Overlap last month, saying: "It irritates me that things like that are brought up sometimes because it’s so irrelevant. It goes back to the same thing.

"We were those kinds of people back then and would do anything to win. It kept you in a certain mentality.

"Then you start playing and you become like that. There’s no way I can be like this now, it’s too much energy."

The former goalkeeper then added: "We were in Tokyo the next day and I had to do a press conference, and it was funny. I had a little scar, and the media asked where I got that from. Roy [Keane] hurt me.

"They thought I was taking the p***, but it was just funny that we had to do that the next day."
