Derry City v Shelbourne, Shamr

It's safe to say it has been a season like no other, and it comes to an exciting climax on Friday night, when either Shelbourne or Shamrock Rovers will be crowned champions.

Shelbourne have led the league for virtually the entire season but poor form in the run in brought five-in-a-row chasing Shamrock Rovers into contention.

Stephen Bradley's side have been below par for most of the season but a late string of results, followed by mishaps from both Shelbourne and Derry now sees them on the verge of an unprecedented fifth successive title.

The task is a simple one for Shelbourne. If Damien Duff's side beat Derry at the Brandywell, they win the league title. Failure to win coupled with a Shamrock Rovers victory against Waterford will mean the league title stays in Tallaght

Both games kick off at 7.45 pm. Shelbourne vs Derry will be broadcast live on RTE Two and the RTE Player while Shamrock Rovers vs Waterford will be broadcast on RTE News Now.

We will have live updates of the game right here on the Irish Mirror as the league title comes to its conclusion. There will also be plenty of pre-game build up and post-match reaction so make sure to stay tuned right here.

Subdued atmosphere among Derry fans

Our man in the Brandywell, Mark McCadden, has been out mixing with the local fans and notes a subdued atmosphere in Derry, their fans reeling following the defeat to St Pat's last week which killed off their title hopes. "Even though the FAI Cup final is next weekend, and Derry are aiming for a repeat of what happened two years ago, things feel low-key," writes Mark.

Derry City name their starting X1

No Patrick Hoban, no Patrick McEleney but that is still a strong Derry team. Colm Whelan and Danny Mullen in attack. Whelan looked superb last wee.

Derry City: Brian Maher; Ronan Boyce, Mark Connolly, Andre Wisdom, Duncan Idehen; Michael Duffy, Sadou Diallo, Adam O'Reilly, Paul McMullan; Colm Whelan, Danny Mullen.

Shelbourne team is named

Shels have gone for as strong a side as they could possibly field with Conor Kearns in goal, Sean Gannon, Paddy Barrett, Kameron Ledwidge and Tyreke Wilson in defence. JJ Lunney and Mark Coyle, their best midfield pairing are anchoring the middle and Damien Duff has really gone for broke by naming Liam Burt, Rayhaan Tulloch, John Martin and Sean Boyd in his starting line up. That's as brave as Duff could possibly be. This should be a cracker.

Waterford hope to spoil the party

We must remember that Waterford defeated Rovers when they last came to Tallaght, a night when Keith Long pulled off a tactical masterstroke, built around a counter attacking strategy.

If it is to happen for them again tonight then the form of Padraig Amond in attack is crucial. He is backed up by the supply lines provided by Connor Parsons, Dean McMenamy. Big nights will be required by Grant Horton and Kacper Radkowski, who both start. Sam Seargeant is in goal, Barry Crowe Baggley is captain, and Rowan McDonald could be the supersub who has a big impact on events off the bench.

Rovers team announced

Shamrock Rovers have gone for an attacking line up with Leon Pohls in goal, Joshua Honohan, Pico Lopes and Lee Grace in defence; Darragh Burns and Neil Farrugia will be on the wings and their midfield looks incredible with Gary O'Neill, Dylan Watts, Jack Byrne and Graham Burke in there. Johnny Kenny plays in attack.

Hello and welcome

Hello and welcome to tonight’s liveblog which brings to a conclusion the most exciting League of Ireland race in 30 years. Ten teams entered, five remaining in contention to win it up until a fortnight ago.

Then five became four as Galway slipped away before four became two last weekend when St Pat’s ran out of time and Derry ran out of steam.

That leaves Shels and Shamrock Rovers, Damien Duff and Stephen Bradley, one side looking to end a drought, another to create history.

Never before has any team won five successive League of Ireland titles. Rovers can do that tonight. But if it is to happen then they need two things to occur: a win against Waterford at Tallaght combined with a Shelbourne draw or defeat in the Brandywell.

If Shels win, though, then the five in a row dream is over. Instead it will be a Shelbourne title, a first for Damien Duff as a manager, a first for Shelbourne since 2006. We will be with you every step of the way keeping an eye on events as they unfold in Tallaght and Derry.
