For many Irish people, moving to Spain is an enticing idea. Its sunny climate, relaxed pace of life and vibrant culture have prompted more than a few of us to dream about making it our permanent home.

The appeal of living under the Spanish sun has only become more appealing amid the current cost of living crisis at home.

With this in mind, one British mum who made the leap has shared her insights on the perks of life in Spain, particularly the surprising affordability of household bills.

Jodie Marlow, known as @jodiemar1ow on TikTok, is a popular content creator who shares her experiences as a mum who has made the move to Spain.

In a recent video, she gave an insight into her bills, and it seems there is a significant difference in what she shells out to maintain a home, Mirror UK reports. So much so, that many viewers were taken aback by the prices in Spain, compared to Ireland.

In the clip, she clarified that the family don't have any rent or mortgage payments as they own their property outright. She confessed the cost of electricity is also "really good", as she has recently switched providers.

Jodie exclaimed: "Oh my gosh, amazing. Last month, before I really put the aircon on, was €37. This month I've had the aircon on nearly every night for the boys and, I think when I tried to look quickly because it's not generated fully, it's around €55 to €60, which I think is nothing. So, if anyone lives in Spain and pays their own electricity bills, you need to message me. I can't believe how cheap it's changed to."

She added: "Water is around €99 every three months, so that's €33 every month. The house actually runs off a gas bottle. I thought it was really weird at first but, actually, it's pretty normal in Spain, and a gas bottle costs around €16."

Jodie said that during the sweltering months, people often forgo hot showers, leading to reduced use of their water heater for significant portions of the year. She is not much for using the gas hob either, opting for an outdoor barbecue and an airfryer instead to make most of her meals.

In terms of running costs, a gas bottle can stretch for three months on a good run, she said. Jodie calculates her council tax to be about €21 a month - a figure she considers quite reasonable, and her home insurance comes in around the same price point.

After posting her video online, it amassed almost 300,000 views and generated a wave of comments from people astonished at the affordability of her living expenses.

One commenter exclaimed: "60 Euros a month! We spend £40 per week for a four-bed house in England." In response, someone chimed in with: "Oh my god, your electric is so cheap. Ours is so much more!"

A third also replied: "So cheap. My gas and electric is £250 together, and my council tax is like £180 a month."

However a person claiming to also live in Spain, wrote: "I live in Malaga, my electric is around 180€ a month, water for the last 3 months was 1260€ and we use gas bottles 200€ for 3, so not cheaper than the UK."

Another mum living in Spain commented: "We are a family of 7 & we paid 100-120€ every month for electricity & about 150-170€ in the summer with air con. We have gas tank underground for hot water & heating."
