Roy Keane was proven wrong as Liverpool made a big Premier League statement against Chelsea. The Reds ran out 2-1 winners at Anfield thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones, whose winner came three minutes after Nicolas Jackson drew the sides level.

Trent Alexander-Arnold played a starring role in the win as he kept Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto quiet. The right back's solid performance came a week after Keane suggested that he couldn't defend.

The Manchester United legend said on ITV after England's 3-1 win over Finland: “You give time to Trent, because his decision making and quality of passing is fantastic, but I can’t believe how bad he is defensively and against better teams he’ll be punished.”

Keane also took aim at the Liverpool star ahead of the UEFA Nations League clash over his performance against Greece days earlier, saying: “If you saw him the other night defending, it looked like he'd never played right-back before!”

Sancho was replaced at half-time on Sunday and although Neto did get past Alexander-Arnold in the second half, the defender was replaced moments later as he was tiring. It later emerged that he almost missed the game due to fitness concerns.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his side’s performance after the match. He said: “The most important thing if you want to have a chance of winning a game like this against a very strong Chelsea is you work as hard as we did.

“It’s very good that we have made a bit of a gap to Chelsea (seven points) because at the end of the season they will be near the top of the league.”

On the decision to overturn a first-half penalty awarded after Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and Liverpool midfielder Jones collided, Slot said: “It doesn’t matter now that we have won, but it could have been a crucial VAR decision to overturn the referee’s decision on the pitch.

“I couldn’t understand it. If the referee looks at it for a minute it shows the VAR should not have interfered.”
