Defence Forces applications on the rise after years of decline
New Defence Forces recruits start on €40,297 while school leaver Cadets start at €44,216
The number of people wanting to join the Irish Defence Forces is on the up again after years of decline.
More than 10,000 applications were received across all Army, Navy and Air Corp competitions by September 30 last.
Defence Minister Micheal Martin confirmed this exceeded the total number of applicants received for the whole of 2023.

He also revealed the number of inductions stood at 494 at the end of September, which also exceeded the total number for last year.
But military authorities also said they plan to have a further 250 new inductions by the end of the year.
The number of discharges from the Defence Forces is also down year on year at 443 to the end of August. A reduction of 35 compared to last year.
The minister was responding to a number of parliamentary questions on the recruitment issue.
He also confirmed that the new pay rates in the military are making a big difference.
