Met Éireann has officially named Storm Ashley with Status Orange and Yellow weather warnings issued.

On Friday, the national forecaster issued a Status Yellow wind alert for all of Ireland, warning of coastal flooding, large coastal waves, fallen trees, branches, difficult driving and cycling conditions, debris, and displaced loose objects.

The warning is valid from 10am on Sunday until midnight on Monday. Issuing the warning, Met Éireann said: “Storm Ashley will bring strong and gusty southerly winds, coupled with high spring tides.”

Galway and Mayo have also been placed under a Status Orange alert for Sunday. The warning is valid from midday on Sunday until 9pm that night.

Met Éireann urged people in these counties to be prepared for coastal flooding, large coastal waves, loose objects displaced, fallen trees, very difficult travelling conditions, dangerous conditions at sea, damage to power lines, power outages and damage to already weakened structures.

On top of these warnings, a Status Yellow - Gale warning for all coasts of Ireland and on the Irish Sea has also been put in place from 6pm on Sunday until midnight on Monday.

Met Éireann warned: “Southeast winds, veering southwest will increase to gale force 8 or strong gale force 9 on all coasts of Ireland and on the Irish Sea.”

Meanwhile, the UK Met Office issued a Yellow - Wind Warning for all six counties in Northern Ireland valid from 3am on Sunday until midday on Monday. Issuing the warning, the weather office said: “A spell of strong winds could cause disruption on Sunday and into Monday”.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said the named storm is set to bring strong winds which may result in coastal flooding. He told his followers: “The storm for Sunday now named by Met Éireann Storm Ashley will bring strong winds and risk of coastal flooding.”

In its forecast for Sunday, Met Éireann warned persistent rain will return for some counties, with thunderstorms possible as Storm Ashley hits.

A spokesperson said: “Becoming very windy on Sunday. Rain will clear quickly to the northeast on Sunday morning to leave a day of sunny spells and blustery showers.

“More persistent rain will return to some western and northern areas during the afternoon with a few thunderstorms possible.

“Strong to gale-force southwest winds will bring the potential for some disruption, especially in Atlantic coastal areas. There'll be the ongoing risk of coastal flooding due to a combination of high seas and spring tides. Highest temperatures of 12C to 15C."
