Oasis rocker Liam Gallagher clearly was far from tickled by Saturday Night Live's portrayal of him and his brother Noel.

The American show's latest Weekend Update skit featured Sarah Sherman and James Austin Johnson playing the brothers as they chatted to host Colin Jost. Dressed just like the famous Manchester pair, they were asked if they would be able to work alongside each other on the tour. James said: "I'm cool if he's cool."

The actress playing Liam responded. "I'm cool - I'm cool - I'm cooler than you are." The host said: "Great, so that's a no" but was told "It's not a hard no, it's a maybe". Then James turned things musical and chimed in: "We said maybe ... if Liam doesn't act like a baby."

Fans online pointed Liam in the direction of the clip. He produced a typically cutting response and simply wrote: "Are they meant to be comedians?" His followers agreed that the sketch wasn't exactly laugh-out-loud stuff and took to X to side with the star.

"Way over the top BUT it just shows how massive your popularity is today that they’d do a skit on you! You have more than arrived in America LG," one told him. Another said: "They went for the easy joke, but just shows how we have all been waiting for you two. It's not funny, but it's love."

Liam, 51, and his older brother Noel, 57, had major tensions ever since Oasis hit the big time in the 1990s. The first notable cracks in the relationship between the pair emerged on their first American tour in 1994, when Liam frequently changed the lyrics of Noel's songs to annoy both his brother and American listeners.

The siblings had been bickering for years while storming the charts, but their simmering rivalry boiled over on August 28, 2009, when lead guitarist and songwriter, Noel, quit the band ahead of a gig in Paris.

As Oasis prepared to go onstage at the Rock En Seine festival in France, an argument broke out, with Liam wielding Noel’s guitar around "like an axe". "He nearly took my face off with it," Noel said and after that the show was cancelled, along with the rest of the tour.

The explosive row in France saw Liam lob a plum at his older brother, which splattered against the dressing room wall, shortly before they were due on stage. "Part of me wishes it did end like that - 'plum throws plum'," Noel told Radio X.

He continued: "He storms out of the dressing room and on the way out, he picked up a plum and threw it across the dressing room and it smashes against the wall." Liam then began "swinging" a guitar, which Noel says was a "real unnecessary violent act".

Noel reckoned he didn't want to leave Oasis - it was simply that he could no longer continue being in a band with his brother. "I'd never had enough of Oasis - I'd had enough of him," he said.
