David Walliams finally breaks silence on rumoured romance with world-famous soap star
Former X Factor judge David Walliams has spilled on Natalie Imbruglia and their long-rumoured romance
He hoped that this Neighbour would be become more than just a good friend. But David Walliams was gutted when former Aussie soap star-turned singer Natalie Imbruglia did not feel the same way.
The Little Britain actor has confessed he fell for the Torn artist “like a ton of bricks” – but she friend-zoned him. The pair, who have been pals for years, were frequently spotted out in London together in 2015, sparking romance rumours.
At the time, the comedian had just split from his wife, Lara Stone. David, 53, has now spilled that he was hopelessly in love with Natalie, 49 – but she never thought of him in that way.

The comic said: “She’s very much friend-zoned me. You know when that happens, that you have a huge crush on someone and you sort of imagine being married and what your kids look like and all that sort of thing? And you’re just completely friend-zoned.”
He revealed Natalie, who found fame playing Ramsay Street’s Beth Brennan in the '90s, saw him more like a “gay best friend” due to his camp nature and sense of humour.
David said: “We didn’t go on any dates. We just became very good friends and we hung out together. But you know, it’s hard not to kind of fall for her like a ton of bricks because she is amazing. I think I’m seen as the sort of gay best friend by a lot of people.”
Asked on Australian radio show Fitzy and Wippa with Kate Ritchie on Nova 96.6 why he thought Natalie put him in the friend zone, he said: “Well, look at me. Let’s be honest, you can do a lot better.”
Over the years, David has dated a string of women. He was romantically linked to Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, 52, model Abi Titmuss, 48, Made in Chelsea’s Ashley James, 37, and Norwegian model Sylvia Flote, 41. A mystery woman who broke his heart, who he referred to only as Miss X, was later revealed to be TV presenter Lisa Snowdon, 52.
He married Dutch model Lara, 40, in 2010 and they split five years later. They have a son, Alfred, 11. David is back working with his Little Britain co-star Matt Lucas, 50, on new television projects. He lost his Britain’s Got Talent judging gig in 2022 and apologised for making “disrespectful comments” about contestants during filming breaks.
