Garda issue warning after gang

A warning has been issued to motorists in Cork after a series of break-ins to vehicles around the Rebel county which has led to a series of cars being robbed.

Gardaí have said that a group of youths have been targeting cars in Youghal, Fermoy, Glanworth and Rathcormac in east Cork, with Garda Bridget Harnett of Bantry Garda Station warning people around the county to lock their cars.

The Garda urged people to ensure they were locked or else their vehicles would be left to the hands of the gangs scooping out cars to break into, CorkBeo reports.

Speaking to Patricia Messinger on C103's Cork Today Show, the Garda also told people to make sure nothing of value, such as a laptop or handbag, was left in their car, especially an unlocked one.

She advised people to stop keeping any cash or coins by the driver's seat as the gangs would be on the lookout for anything of value to break into the car.

"They're looking initially for cash and coins but when they find the vehicles unlocked in some cases they're actually stealing the cars,” Garda Harnett explained on the radio show.

"Keep your cars in well-lit areas here you can see them and other people can see it if there's someone suspicious hanging around outside the car.

“Anyone who sees anything like that just make sure to give us a buzz and let us know. We never use names or anything and we can go out and check straight away.

"You work so hard to have that car and keep it on the road, nowadays in particular, to have someone take it and steal it and crash it, it's heartbreaking for people."
