Clinton Morrison has revealed how he used to annoy Roy Keane at breakfast while on international duty.

The former Crystal Palace striker made his Ireland breakthrough under Mick McCarthy in 2001 and scored nine goals in 36 senior appearances for the Boys in Green.

And while Keane was in international exile for part of Morrison’s Ireland career, the London-born forward made the most of his time together with the Corkman - even if it wound up the Manchester United legend.

“I got on really well with him,” Morrison told Sky Sports. “Say we were at a dinner table or a breakfast table, there’d always be a seat… he’d sit there and that seat would be spare.

“I’m just coming down and I’m talking to him in the morning. He’s like, ‘Oh Clinton, can you just leave me be for now’. I’m like, ‘No, I want to be like you’. So I’m watching what he eats for breakfast, what he eats for dinner, trying to get that extra level.”

He added that he underestimated Keane’s footballing prowess before he shared a training pitch with the Old Trafford legend.

“I saw Roy in training and I’m like, this guy can’t play ball. As soon as he took his first touch, he got it and zinged the ball. I said, ‘He’s a player’. You see him on the TV and he’s moody, but he has got a good side to him and a funny side.”

Morrison also revealed some advice that he got from Robbie Keane when he was a newcomer on the international scene.

“The first time I come into the Ireland squad, (I’ve got) diamonds, everything, earrings, hood up, jeans hanging down,” he said. “I remember Robbie Keane saying, ‘Around here mate, nah, until you’ve played a few games you don’t come in looking like that’.”
