Vitezslav Jaros says the time he spent away from Liverpool on loan prepared him for last weekend’s first-team debut.

The Czech Republic youngster came off the bench during the second half of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace after regular number one Alisson succumbed to a hamstring injury.

He was on the bench in the first place as illness had ruled out Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Jaros (23), who also featured for the Reds in pre-season, spent the 2021 League of Ireland season at St Patrick’s Athletic, where he made 39 first-team appearances and helped the Saints to FAI Cup glory in a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Bohemians.

He was voted the club’s Player of the Year and won the Soccer Writers Ireland Goalkeeper of the Year award for his performances with the Inchicore club.

After Pat’s, which was his first taste of senior football, Jaros had spells at Notts County, Stockport and Austrian side Sturm Graz, and he clocked up a total of 90 first-team games before Saturday’s Anfield appearance.

“It's something you dream of as a kid,” he said, reflecting on last weekend. “Obviously it was a bit stressful as a 'keeper coming on towards the end there, especially in a game like this when it was up and down towards the end. But I managed to keep a clean sheet and we managed to get the three points. Brilliant.

“Personally, it's a great reward to come on and be able to get my debut.”

Jaros added that his phone was hopping afterwards with messages of support.

As for his time at St Pat’s, he added: “I went on a few loans in the past, which I think got me ready and I've played quite a few games now. I'm ready, I'm available to play whenever.”
