But detectives who have launched a full scale murder Inquiry believe little Kyran may have died up to two years ago. They still admit they have no idea when or how he died and are not ruling out that his death may have been accidental.
In their public appeal, which is being shared around Louth and east Meath, the Drogheda Dolls said: "I know there's a lot going on in the town with the little boy Kyran Durnin missing and a lot of negativity and anger.
"Please if you have any information at all, however small, please reach out. It's important to remember to be respectful while the truth is sought. I pray this innocent little boy is found and people do the right thing."
Gardai are hopeful that local women with even a tiny bit of knowledge about the case might provide them with valuable new clues.
Officers suspect a handful of people know what happened to the child and are involved in a cover-up.
They now say it could take them up to six months to get to the truth because of the various complexities attached to the case.
A proposed dig this week has been put off for now while Gardai continue their investigations.
They were looking at searching a house, the grounds of another premises and possible waste ground in another area of the town.
A Garda source said: "We need to gather more information before we start digging again. There is no point in going in somewhere unless we have a pretty good idea beforehand that we will find Kyran's body. We can't stress enough that this whole case is going to take time."
The Gardai had searched the house where the Durnin family lived on and off in Dundalk in recent years but found nothing.
The child's mother, Dayla Durnin, is currently in England. Gardai were told that Ms. Durnin said she did not know what happened to her son.
Anyone with information about Kyran is asked to contact Drogheda Station.
