An inquest into the death of a young Wicklow girl after choking on food at a creche is set to go ahead next year after it was indicated that no criminal prosecution will arise over the fatal incident.

Lauren Boland (two) from Delgany, Wicklow died at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin on January 19, 2023, a day after being brought to the hospital by ambulance following what had been described as “a tragic choking event.”

A brief sitting of Dublin District Coroner’s Court last week heard that the full inquest into the circumstances of the girl’s death is in a position to proceed.

The inquest had previously been adjourned last January as criminal proceedings were being considered in the case while gardaí prepared to submit a file on the toddler’s death to the DPP.

Detective Inspector Donncha Maguire told the coroner, Clare Keane, at the latest hearing that the inquest could now proceed with the agreement of Lauren’s family – an indication that no criminal prosecution has been directed by the DPP.

However, Det Insp Maguire made an application on behalf of his colleague, Inspector Paraic Roberts of Wexford, for a six-month adjournment of the case.

He explained that the situation about the inquest being able to proceed had only been finalised in recent days and Lauren’s family wished to get legal advice and give instructions to counsel.

Dr Keane granted the application and adjourned the inquest for further mention to April 8, 2025 when it is expected a date for the full inquest will be fixed.

The coroner’s court previously heard last January that the results of a postmortem showed that Lauren had died as a result of brain injuries caused by a lack of oxygen due to a “choking episode.”

No details of the incident were revealed in court but it is understood the girl started to choke on food while attending a creche.

A GoFundMe page established by Lauren’s family in appreciation of the work done by the first responders and staff at the paediatric intensive care unit at CHI Crumlin has raised over €35,000 to date.
