Alan Browne was the hero for Sunderland as he scored a last-gasp leveller against Leeds at the Stadium of Light last night.

The goal won't make the Irish midfielder's highlight reel, not that the 29-year-old will be bothered.

With his side trailing 2-1 in the dying embers of the game, Browne clipped a ball into the box in the general direction of the Leeds goal.

Somehow, Leeds keeper Illan Meslier made a mess of the bouncing ball, letting it squirm past him into the goal as the home fans went bonkers.

Meslier was quick to blame the turf as the ball did take an awkward bounce, but the French shot-stopper will be furious at himself upon reflection.

Browne's post-match comments aren't likely to improve the goalkeeper's morale, as the former Preston star thanked Meslier for 'chucking one in.'

“The keeper chucked it in the net so fair play to him. Nice assist,” Browne told Sky Sports after the game.

That point for Sunderland maintained their impressive start to the season. They are now two points clear of Burnley at the top of the Sky Bet Championship after playing nine games.

Irish fans will no doubt be hoping Browne's good fortune rubs off on his teammates when he joins back up with the national side for next week's UEFA Nations League matches away to Finland and Greece.
