People in the north-east have been asked not to attend Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda unless it is an absolute emergency.

The warning was issued by the hospital management yesterday after a surge in patients all week.

At one stage mid-week, 10 ambulances were lined up outside for hours on end waiting to admit patients.

The hospital said only the most critically-ill patients are being prioritised for treatment and beds, such is the demand.

It said: "It has been extremely busy over the past couple of days with a high number of patient presentations.

"As a result we are encouraging the public to attend the Emergency Department for emergencies only."

The hospital said people should contact their GP or GP Out of Hours Services and that the Minor Injuries Unit at the Louth County Hospital in Dundalk is open from 9am to 8pm daily.

Most patients who go to Dundalk are being seen, assessed and treated in under one hour.

The Lourdes Hospital is the main hospital for Louth, Meath, Monaghan and parts of Cavan.
