Dublin-born full-back Peter Kioso has been called up by DR Congo for this month’s African Cup of Nations qualification double-header against Tanzania.

Kioso, who moved from Rotherham to Oxford United in the summer, has been promoted from the standby list following the withdrawal of Ipswich Town defender Axel Tuanzebe.

Born and raised in Swords, the 25-year-old’s parents both hail from DR Congo.

A former Hartlepool and Luton Town defender, Kioso moved to Rotherham in June 2022 and played 25 times before switching during the summer to Oxford.

He started out at MK Dons after his family moved to England when he was 11, and has played in the National League, League Two, League One and in the Championship.

Kioso spoke about his international ambitions earlier in the summer, saying: “I know that my time is going to come for sure, and I know there have been a few sniffs at international football, but I’m not going to put pressure on myself.

“I know it’ll come at the right time, and it’s down to how I perform week in and week out.”
