Babies born in December will now receive the Government’s "Baby Boost" payment that was announced as part of Budget 2025.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys confirmed the news in the Dáil chamber on Wednesday, just 24 hours after the budget was announced.

The plan, proposed by Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman, will see parents receive a €420 treble Child Benefit payment when their child is born. It was suggested that it would start in January.

The Irish Mirror understands that a number of TDs and Ministers had been contacted by people raising concerns that they would miss out on both the double Child Benefit payments in November and December and the baby boost if their baby was born in December.

Minister Humphreys confirmed on Wednesday that the plan would be brought forward by a month.

"I have been contacted by many women over the last 24 hours whose babies are due to arrive in December," she said.

"They are very worried their babies will arrive too late for the Double Child Benefit Payment at the start of December but too early for the New Born Grant in January.

"As a mother, I do not want to see any woman or baby miss out.

"I am pleased to confirm to the House tonight that babies born in December will be eligible to receive the Newborn grant when their mother receives their first Child Benefit payment in January.

"So my message to those families is – don’t worry the Christmas babies will be looked after."

The so-called Baby Boost is one of several social welfare initiatives aimed at parents during Budget 2025.

There will be a "double double" Child Benefit payment, which will see parents receive a €280 payment per child in November and December.
