Shane Lowry overcame a disappointing first round to earn a decent payday for his efforts at the acciona Open de España presented by Madrid.

Host Jon Rahm made a strong charge in a bid to win his national open for the fourth time, despite being present at the birth of his third child on Monday and his arrival in Spain the following day, but he was beaten in a play-off by compatriot Angel Hidalgo.

Lowry, 37, opened up with a first round 75 on Thursday to leave himself well off the pace in what was his first appearance in the tournament in a decade. But a self-confessed 'few too many drinks' on Thursday night with his Ryder Cup team-mate Tyrrell Hatton was just the tonic for a return to form.

Lowry was much happier with a second round 66. that moved him up the leaderboard, kept his bid ticking along with a 68 on Saturday and a final round 69 earned him a joint 13th place finish.

That followed his joint 12th placings in the BMW PGA Championship and Amgen Irish Open in the previous two weeks and was enough for him to pocket €42,907.41.

After a long run of tournaments - his trip to Spain marked his ninth tournament appearance in 11 weeks - the Clara man will now be glad of a bit of a rest.

He will return to action at the Dunhill Links in three weeks time and will be aiming to improve on his early Ryder Cup position in his bid to make the European team for the third time in a row - and the tough mission at Bethpage Black next September against a US team that comfortably overcame the International team in the President's Cup over the weekend.

The team's new qualification process began just before the Amgen Irish Open and Lowry is currently in 21st spot. Rory McIlroy is in second place behind newly-crowned Irish Open champion Rasmus Hojgaard.
