McLaren took pole position in the teams' championship as Lando Norris kept his title hopes alive with a superb comeback drive.

Oscar Piastri duelled with pole-sitter Charles Leclerc but came out on top to secure his second career victory. And Norris came from 15th on the grid to finish fourth, ahead of title rival Max Verstappen who had started eight places ahead.

The Brit beamed: "I'm very happy with the result, not just for myself but for Oscar - another win for him is amazing. A win and a fourth is not what we were expecting today. A good points haul, outscored Red Bull again which is exactly what we were hoping to do. The car was amazing today and that gives us a lot of confidence going into the next few races."

Norris is 59 points behind Verstappen in the title race. The Dutchman finished fifth having struggled for pace throughout and said his car was "uncontrollable" at times.

McLaren are top of the pile for the first time in a decade. They last led the standings after the first race of the 2014 season and are hunting a first teams' title since 1998. Both their drivers have now won multiple races this year.

Piastri said: "I think that definitely goes down as one of the best races of my career. To hang on for so long with very, very few mistakes, I think definitely one of my best drives."

Leclerc led for the first 20 laps but was caught out by Piastri at the end of the long start/finish straight. He spent the rest of the race trying to get past the Aussie but had to settle for second and has never won in Baku despite qualifying on pole there four times in his career.

The Ferrari driver admitted: "Oscar did an incredible job in turn one - I saw him on my inside and I was not too stressed. I didn't want to defend like crazy because I still had cold tyres, so I didn't let him pass but probably made his life a little bit too easy."

Ferrari wanted a double podium but Carlos Sainz crashed with Sergio Perez as they duelled for third place on the penultimate lap. That pushed George Russell up into third and handed Lewis Hamilton a point, who spent the afternoon racing way down the order having started in the pit lane.

He finished 10th behind Oliver Bearman who scored points again in only his second F1 race, having done so for Ferrari earlier this year. Hamilton showed his admiration for his fellow Briton as he said: "It was really great to see the rookies doing so well today. To see such great young talent coming through with bright futures and to be racing amongst them was really cool."
