Spiders can be pretty frightening but even if you aren’t terrified of them the idea of one crawling on you at night can be enough to turn you off.

This month many people may have noticed that large spiders are appearing all over the place as wet weather followed by a heatwave has forced them inside.

If you have seen a few more hanging about lately, this can be quite unsettling but you don't need to worry too much, as there are some easy things you can do to keep them out of your homes, Daily Star reports.

Cinnamon

Spiders cannot stand the smell of cinnamon so this is a perfect deterrent.

The ground version is best, which doesn’t cost you anything if it is already on your spide rack but if you don’t have that to hand you could even pop some dried sticks or put a scented candle on to burn.

Vinegar

While vinegar is not as pungent as cinnamon, it can help to keep the eight-legged creatures away.

A solution that comprises half white vinegar and half water popped into a spray bottle and then sprayed in corners, cracks and holes is ideal to keep them away.

Just be careful where you spray the solution, as it can cause damage to varnished services.

Citrus

Spiders also hate citrus so this can be handy to keep them away.

Try rubbing some orange or lemon peel along areas such as skirting boards, window sills and shelves. A scented candle or lemon-scented cleaning product also works.

Garlic

Some whole or crushed cloves popped into a spray bottle can be a great deterrent.

Top it up with some water and use it to spray in the areas where you think the pesky bugs come in.

Mint

Back last year a woman, known only as Sylvia, shared her rather simple hack in a post on the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK.

Her post read: "Had a leftover packet of mint and a small amount of cleaner left. Chopped mint and added to anti-bac cleaner and filled with water.

"Sprayed under window sill outside and around the door. I watched the spiders run as I sprayed.

"They hate mint right enough. Some people use essential oils but I just thought I would use up what I had."
