Rory McIlroy's net worth is understood to have risen by 12.5% this year, with the golfer Northern Ireland’s richest person under 40.

The world number three's personal wealth was reportedly £225million (€267m) as of May of this year, up from £200million (€237m) in 2023, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

Among McIlroy's big wins in the 12 months between the 2023 and 2024 lists being published was the Scottish Open, where he pocketed £1.29m (€1.5m) for his success, while it is understood the Holywood man has made more than £65m (€77m) on the course.

However, he has earned a lot more money through sponsorship deals with the likes of Nike, Omega, TaylorMade and others.

McIlroy is a three-time FedEx Cup and four-time Race to Dubai/DP World Tour Rankings winner, and has also claimed four majors during his career.

As far as endorsements go, McIlroy was previously sponsored by the likes of Titleist, FootJoy, Jumeirah and EA Sports.

McIlroy had just filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll when this year's Sunday Times Rich List was published. However, the couple have since cancelled their plans to get divorced.

Robert Watts, compiler of the Sunday Times rich list, told the Irish News at the time: “We don’t change the valuation of someone until after a divorce is finalised, but one would expect that will reduce his wealth at some point.”

“I was very struck by how much he earns away from the golf course, it is significantly more lucrative,” added Mr Watts.

“That was certainly the case with other sports stars like the tennis player Emma Radacanu.”

McIlroy surged into contention at the Irish Open on Thursday and begins his round on Friday just two shots off overnight leader Todd Clements, while he is also among the guests being interviewed on Friday night's Late Late Show.

The 35-year-old could increase his net worth further with victory at Royal County Down this week, with the winner of the tournament pocketing €920,000.
