Gardaí have arrested a man after seizing a loaded shotgun during a vehicle checkpoint in Cork during the early hours of Thursday morning.

At around 1.10am on Thursday morning, officers in Mallow stopped a vehicle. Authorities uncovered a loaded shotgun, which was subsequently seized.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda Station in the Cork Division.

The operation involved Gardaí from the Mallow Detective Unit, Mallow Drugs Unit and Mallow Roads Policing Unit.

The seized items will be forwarded to The Garda Ballistics Unit for further analysis.
