A probe has been launched after a worker was found dead in the freezer of a US grocery store.

The man was discovered unconscious by horrified colleagues in Food Lion's branch in Raleigh, North Carolina. Raleigh's police department confirmed no foul play was suspected, but labour and safety authorities are investigating.

Local cops believe that the man, who has not been named, had a medical emergency on Monday night, before he died in the freezer and was found by workers. Officials believe he died of natural causes.

Food Lion has over 1,100 shops across 10 different states, and employs over 85,000 people. The budget grocery store was founded as Food Town in 1957, before changing its name in 1983.

Though its sales rose slightly, by 1.3 per cent, in the first quarter of the year, Americans are largely abandoning dollar stores in their droves.

This incident is not the first case of an employee dying unexpectedly at work. It was previously reported that an Arby's manager was found dead in a walk-in freezer at their location in May 2023. The shocking incident happened at a branch in New Iberia, Louisiana, around 70 miles southwest of Baton Rouge. Police reported that no foul play was believed to have taken place at the time.

Captain Leland Laseter of the New Iberia Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division shared information at the time. He said: “A situation like this is unusual, so we’re taking extra precautions during the investigation." He added: "After completely processing the crime scene, this does not seem like a homicide, it seems like an accident."
