Hands on with the new DJI Neo

Consumer drone market leader DJI has taken the wraps off the DJI Neo, which weighs just 135g.

Being touted as a new tool for vloggers, Neo is the company's lightest and most compact drone to date.

Irish Mirror got up close and personal with the new drone for a quick hands on at Europe’s biggest tech show, IFA in Berlin.

And we can’t wait to take it flying for a full review, because Neo looks like so much fun and a drone that will have broader appeal than just the vlogging community.

With a price tag of just €199, I suspect this will be one of the most popular Christmas gifts this year.

It’s a new line for DJI and industry observers say the firm launched Neo in response to the popularity of Zero Zero Robotics' Hover X1 drone which we reviewed earlier this year and called a “flying selfie stick”.

Here’s everything you need to know about the tiny new DJI drone

Unlike all other DJI drones, Neo can be completely controlled without a remote, launched and landed on the palm of your hand

It comes packed with heaps of popular DJI drone features such as AI subject tracking and QuickShots such as Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight, Helix and Boomerang.

The camera onboard has a decent sized 1/2 inch sensor. And it produces high-resolution 4K video at 30 frames per second (fps) that is ultra-stabilised as you’d expect from DJI. Still images can be captured in 12MP resolution.

Battery life is up to 18 minutes.

The tiny drone comes with full-coverage propeller guards so you can use it safely indoors and outdoors. This should heighten its appeal in the festive season - it's the safest DJI drone to buy any beginner or younger gadget enthusiast.

DJI Neo can be operated without an additional remote control. However, it can be paired with the DJI Fly app, remote controllers, RC Motion or DJI Goggles for increased flight and camera control. It also supports voice control.

It supports DJI’s automatic Return to Home (RTH) for convenient, worry-free operation.

The compact flying camera comes with 22GB of onboard storage, which is enough space to store up to 40 minutes of 4K/30fps video or 55 minutes of 1080p/60fps video.

"At DJI we are always studying everyday camera use so that we can help people capture their videos and photos in the most convenient way possible. The DJI Neo strives to give people the latest tech in the smallest form factor so that they can capture their daily lives, saved as treasured memories, safely and with ease," Ferdinand Wolf, Creative Director at DJI, said.
