Cavan GAA tight-lipped on King

Cavan GAA has refused to comment on its sponsorship deal with Kingspan following the damning findings of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.

The inquiry concluded that the Cavan-based company, while not responsible for the 2017 fire that resulted in the deaths of 72 people, showed "complete disregard for fire safety" in terms of how it marketed its products and "deeply entrenched and persistent dishonesty… in pursuit of commercial gain".

Kingspan has been a long-time supporter of Cavan GAA, first coming on board as team sponsors in 1995 and later snapping up the naming rights for Breffni Park, the home of Gaelic games in the county.

The ground became known as Kingspan Breffni Park in 2002 in the first deal of its kind in the GAA. It has since been shortened to Kingspan Breffni.

Kingspan subsequently enjoyed a similar arrangement with Ulster Rugby but while the province has moved quickly to clarify that the current sponsorship deal will come to an end in June of next year, Cavan GAA issued a “no comment” when contacted about the matter.

A spokesperson also refused to clarify the terms of Cavan’s current deal with Kingspan and when it is due to expire.

Golfer Shane Lowry’s sponsorship deal with the company has also been questioned in light of recent events.

A small amount of Kingspan’s insulation product, Kooltherm K15, was used on the Grenfell Tower building and, though not the reason for the blaze, the inquiry found that the company "knowingly created a false market in insulation" from 2005 onwards for use on buildings over 18 metres tall.

It was noted how Kingspan did not withdraw that particular product from the market despite “disastrous” test results and the business’s “own concerns about its fire performance”, adding that the lack of knowledge within the industry around insulation and cladding fire safety testing had been "cynically exploited".
