Aslan's Billy McGuinness has called for the band to support Oasis next year after performing with Coldplay on Sunday night.

The This Is musicians were left flabbergasted after they received a call three weeks ago from Coldplay’s management asking them to perform with the band at Croke Park, saying frontman Chris Martin was a "huge fan".

Now. fresh from performing the band’s hit song Crazy World with Coldplay in front of 80,000 people on Sunday night, Billy said he wants Aslan to support Oasis when they play Croke Park next year on August 16 and 17.

Billy exclusively told us: “I think Aslan would be a perfect fit for Oasis. Liam Gallagher’s partner Debbie (Gwyther) is from Finglas and she is a huge Aslan fan. We’re going to try and get in touch with Debbie because she is a huge fan… if it’s going, we’d love to do it. I think it would be a perfect fit.”

In 2020, Liam Gallagher heaped praise on the Dublin rockers, labelling the late Christy Dignam as “a dude” at the time, revealing Debbie is a massive fan. But Billy ranted that even he couldn’t get a ticket to the Oasis reunion as he labelled Dublin hoteliers “ridiculous”.

“I couldn’t get tickets. It was ridiculous. Never mind the ticket prices, what about the hotels? People had the hotels booked for those dates and they got cancelled. And then the price went up three times the original price. That has to be illegal,” he said.

Opening up about performing with Chris Martin on Sunday night, Billy told us how he had to keep it a secret from his own family for three weeks.

He said: “About three weeks ago just before we went to Australia, we got a call from Coldplay’s management, and they said that Chris Martin would love to get up with the band and perform Crazy World. I mean, you don’t have to ask us, we’re there.

“But we were warned three weeks ago that if this leaks out then it won’t happen. They wanted it to be a total surprise. Even on Sunday at the sound check, we couldn’t do Crazy World at the sound check, we had to do a non-Aslan song. Just so people couldn’t hear what was going on.

“I didn’t see any of the gig last night. We were told not to wander around the stadium because we don’t want people to know we’re here. So we just stayed in the dressing room.

“I had to keep it from the family and everything. We just locked it down and forgot about it. It was great that we were going to Australia because we had other things in our mind. But we were in Australia saying we couldn’t wait to get back to Dublin,” he said, laughing.

Billy said he didn’t realise Chris was a huge Aslan fan. “That became evident at rehearsal on Sunday because Lee was talking to him and Lee was saying ‘Listen Chris, the chords are…. And Chris says, ‘Lee, I know the song inside out, you’re talking to a fan here.’

“He knew the history of the band, he knew how long we were going. I told him it was a really tough decision after Christy passed last June to keep the band going. Chris was aware of all of that.”

Billy said it was an even bigger pinch me moment when the band ended up playing with Coldplay as they originally thought they’d just be performing with Chris.

“We only rehearsed with Chris. But he went in and told the band ‘this is a great vibe’. The whole band came out on stage. We played with the whole of Coldplay and it was only supposed to be Chris Martin. I think it got a bigger reaction than Yellow.”

Billy said Chirs is “so normal and so loving”, and constantly kept asking Aslan if they were okay with being on stage in Croke Park - but Billy admitted he was "sh*tting himself".

He described the crowd as a “thunderous noise” when they performed Crazy World. “It was beautiful. It was a really special moment,” he added.
