LIV Golf star Tyrrell Hatton suffered a spectacular collapse to sit 10 shots behind lead Niklas Norgaard heading into the final round of the British Masters.

On Saturday, Hatton struggled with a poor third-round score of 76 at the Belfry to slip out of contention. The 32-year-old Englishman, who is playing in a DP World Tour event despite his LIV allegiance, had the lead at the start of the day, but fell away with an 18-hole showing to forget.

Hatton’s dismal day left him 10 shots off the lead, which is held by Norgaard. The Dane opened up a four-shot advantage heading into Sunday after carding nine birdies in an impressive 64 to move to 16 under.

Norgaard, the world No. 205, looked to have let an opportunity to have a bigger lead slip as he bogeyed the par-five 17th given he carded a fine front nine of 33. But the 32-year-old responded by posting a birdie on the 18th to take a healthy lead into the clubhouse.

Norgaard is seeking his fourth professional victory, and the door to lead the chase opened as Hatton collapsed. He dropped shots with three bogeys on the front nine before driving erratically down the stretch.

Hatton bogeyed the par-three 12th after finding water off the tee and continued to struggle on the very next hole. He pulled his drive out of bounds, resulting in a brutal triple-bogey seven, only to somewhat salvaged his score late, posting birdies over his next two holes along with a three-par finish. Hatton’s third-round score of four-over left him tied-seventh and 10 shots back from Norgaard.

The two-time Ryder Cup winner was the clear favorite before the tournament. But his collapse has left him in the dark in an event where Hatton desperately wanted to perform; the British Masters is his first start at a regular DP World Tour event since January after appealing against the sanctions imposed for playing LIV Golf events without permission.

Hatton is taking part in the British Masters because he wants to secure eligibility to play in his fourth Ryder Cup. The Englishman must be a DP World Tour member in 2025, which means he must in play at least four tour events in 2024 - the minimum required to become eligible, which is why Hatton drastically flew to the Dubai Desert Classic in January.

Across the 2024 LIV Golf season, Hatton currently sits third in the individual standings with his one win coming in Nashville. He is a key member of Jon Rahm ’s Legion XIII, who sit second in the team standings with four wins to their name this season.

LIV Golf has two more events on its schedule for 2024, including its last regular season event in Chicago (13-15 September). The Team Championship in Dallas (20-22 September) will serve as the season finale.
