Alex Gerrard has been enjoying a life of luxury since Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard opted to take a job in the Middle East.

The former Reds captain was named manager of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in July 2023 after previously being dismissed by Aston Villa. Having snapped up several notable players last summer, including former Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson, Gerrard extended his contract until 2027 at the turn of the year.

The iconic Liverpool midfielder signed a lavish deal with the Saudi Pro League Club and is reported to be earning £15million per year. While this makes him one of the best-paid coaches in the world, his family are not based in Saudi Arabia after turning down the offer of a house in the city of Damman.

Instead, his wife Alex and their four children reside in Bahrain. The Gulf nation is not too far from Damman, where Al-Ettifaq are based, and allows Alex Gerrard, nee Curran, and their family to live a glamorous lifestyle.

The Gerrard family are reported to live in a luxury villa within the village of Hamala. Their house costs around £10,000-a-month, and is complete with a swimming pool and games room, and has members of Bahraini royalty nearby.

A model and fashion columnist, Curran and Gerrard began dating in 2002 and the couple married five years later. Since moving to the Middle East, it has previously been reported that the 41-year-old enjoys spending time at the Bahrain World Trade Center in Manama, which boasts luxury fashion brands, and waterfront shopping centre The Avenues.

With Al Ettifaq manager Gerrard splitting his time between the two countries, there are still opportunities to enjoy life together as a family. The Gerrards have memberships at the exclusive Four Seasons, which houses the Cut restaurant run by Michelin star chef Wolfgang Puck, and the Ritz Carlton, which shows Premier League games in an open-air bar. The family have also been spotted enjoying time in the Bahrain rugby club.

The couple have four children together: Lilly-Ella, 20; Lexie, 18; Lourdes, 12 and Lio, 7. Their youngest children attend an esteemed English language school in Bahrain, where fees almost reach £11k per child.

Gerrard’s coaching duties see him make an hour-long commute from Hamala to Damman, including crossing a 15-mile causeway between the two countries. Despite the family not living in Saudi Arabia, it appears that the Gerrards have been able to find a work-life balance, with Steven having committed to Al Ettifaq until 2027.

Upon signing his new deal in January, Gerrard gave an insight into how his family had taken to their new lifestyle: "The renewal decision brought a lot of positive feelings for me and my family, as it was the culmination of the hard work and true dedication that everyone showed from day one," he said.

"From the beginning, we realised the size of the responsibility and the number of challenges that awaited us, which prompted us to invest in creating new infrastructure, such as new training facilities and building a new stadium. We have achieved remarkable progress in these projects, as a result of the mutual trust between me and the club management.”
