Alex Ferguson will be hoping he can help Team Ireland to a Racing League victory when his horse runs in their colours this week.

Road To Wembley runs in the opening race at Newcastle on Thursday, the tote.co.uk Wey Aye The Placepot Racing League R29 Handicap over 2m½f, for trainer Richard Hughes.

The three-year-old is owned by the former Manchester United manager and will be partnered by jockey Finley Marsh.

Road To Wembley recorded back-to-back victories on the all-weather at Wolverhampton and Lingfield earlier in the year and was second to the Mark Prescott-trained Warmonger when having his first run on turf last month.

He runs on the Tapeta at Newcastle on Thursday evening as one of 12 runners for Team Ireland across the card on the penultimate week of the Racing League.

Wales & The West come into the week on top of the table after the Jamie Osborne-led team enjoyed a treble at Windsor last Thursday.

The East, managed by Chris Hughes with the help of assistant Charlie Fellowes, held a narrow advantage heading into the seven-race card last week, with Wales & The West second and London & The South in third.

The East enjoyed eight winners across the first two meetings at Yarmouth and Wolverhampton, and while their advantage significantly eroded after leaving Chepstow two weeks ago without a victory, they struck first at Windsor last week with the Roger Varian-trained Nazron (5-1) to ensure they remained in pole position.

London & The South, managed by Matt Chapman, enjoyed a one-two in the second race last Thursday and briefly hit the front in the overall competition – but it is Osborne who has the bragging rights ahead of the penultimate night at Newcastle this week courtesy of a hat-trick of victories.

Wales & The West lead the Racing League on 571.5 points, with London & The West close up behind in second on 567 and The East on 529 in third, while Ireland are further back on 395.
