Former Ireland star Shane Long lined out with local club Gortnahoe Glengoole last weekend as he played his first competitive hurling match since childhood.

Long previously played for the Tipperary minor hurlers before focus shifted to professional football, but the Ireland legend picked up the stick again for his old club.

Coming off the bench in the Mid Tipperary Hurling Championship, Long and Gortnahoe Glengoole pulled off an upset against a Thurles Sarsfields side that featured Ger 'Redser' O'Grady and Lar Corbett.

Long last played a game of hurling back in 2004 but could be in line for a swansong with his old club.

The Tipperary man also lined out for last week's Hurling for Cancer charity match and spoke of his love for the game.

"It was great to be involved. It is 20 years since I played a game of hurling so it was tough but hurling was always my first love so I am delighted to be a part of today. It is a great cause.

"I thought it was going to be all ex-jockeys and ex-football players and I showed up and there was a shower of All-Stars making me look stupid.

"I played hurling until I was 17 and had to make a decision then soccer took over."
