Wrexham star James McClean could not resist a jibe at the expense of Bolton with a savage play on words about the Toughsheet Stadium after the teams played out a stalemate.

The Republic of Ireland international starred for the Red Dragons during their second game of the League One campaign as they earned a point as a result of the 0-0 draw. Captaining the Welsh outfit, he played 90 minutes at left-back, as he did in Wrexham's opening day win over Wycombe Wanderers.

With the third tier newcomers having earned four points from a possible six in their first couple of outings in the division, they currently sit in eighth. However, after being on the receiving end of jeers from the home crowd in Bolton, McClean could not resist getting a dig in towards the Trotters fanbase.

Taking to Instagram, the former Premier League stalwart posted a picture from the game itself with this accompanied by a light-humoured mocking remark. Hitting back at his detractors, he simply wrote: "Point on the road at the toughs--- stadium... fantastic away support."

By contrast, Wrexham head coach Phil Parkinson was on hand with a more comprehensive analysis of proceedings following the game. Pointing out the strengths demonstrated by Bolton, he acknowledged: "They are a good side. It was a good test for us today, I was interested to see how we fared.

"They started so quick, and we knew they would, but we didn’t quite react to that start. I thought we grew into the game and it was a real effort from the lads. We showed at times that we have quality, we had moments and so did they. It was a hard fought point for us and very important to show that we can compete at this level at the top end of the division.

"I felt we did that. (Bolton) have been up there for the last couple of years. Obviously, they have invested heavily in the summer. It was interesting with the shape they play, we had worked on it on the training ground and got better as the game went on at dealing with that."

As for his own side's showing on the road, the Dragons manager was eager to assert that his team is still trying to navigate the step up in the quality of opposition after gaining promotion. He said: "At times in the second period, I thought we gained some control with the ball and looked like we could go and win it. But then, we had to rely on Arthur for one, in particular, outstanding save.

"We conceded two last week against Wycombe and it was important, even when you win, that we reflect and try to learn from that. I felt we did that today, there was a real resilience as a team and we can take a lot of heart from the draw.

Parkinson added: "We have a lot of players who have played at this level but I think, sometimes when you come up quickly through the divisions, it is adapting again to what is required at the next level."
