A father and son were arrested after two brothers from a different family were allegedly stabbed over a long-running land dispute in West Cork.

The two siblings, who are in their 30s, were recovering in Cork University Hospital last night following the frenzied knife attack near Dunmanway at 7 pm on Saturday.

Both victims are understood to have suffered serious injuries after being stabbed with what is believed to have been a large blade after an argument spiralled out of control and turned violent.

The brothers were able to raise the alarm and a relative rushed the pair to Dunmanway Community Hospital. But medics decided their injuries were too serious.

One brother was then airlifted to Cork University Hospital and underwent emergency surgery on Saturday night. He remained in a serious but stable condition while the other was brought to Cork University Hospital by ambulance.

Gardaí raced to the scene after the horror stabbing and sealed off the area. Members of the Garda Technical Bureau conducted a full examination of the scene yesterday.

Gardaí then arrested the father and son who were being quizzed under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act by detectives in a West Cork Garda Station.
