Prince Harry would be 'awkward

Prince Harry would be an 'awkward' presence if he returns to the UK to attend the same sad event as Prince William, an expert has claimed.

Last week, it was revealed that William and Harry's uncle Lord Robert Fellowes, who also worked for the late Queen, had died at the age of 82. He was the husband of their aunt Jane, who is the older sister of their late mother Princess Diana. Jane is known to be close to both of her nephews and joined them both in 2021 when they unveiled a statue of Diana in the gardens of Kensington Palace. Back in May, Jane was seen with Harry when she attended his 10th anniversary service for the Invictus Games at St Paul's Cathedral.

It is unclear if Harry will make the trip from California back to the UK in order to attend his uncle's funeral. But according to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, if Harry were to attend it could throw up a 'awkward' situation. She told OK! : "I imagine Harry will want to be at his uncle’s funeral…. but his presence would cause all sorts of awkwardness if William attends too. It would be nice to think, though, that two grown-up men could at least be in the same space…. as they were at the Coronation, albeit briefly…. without ruining an occasion of great sadness and solemnity."

However, Jennie added if there were to be any reunion between the two brothers, it might not be enough to thaw relations between them. She added: "I think we have learned by now that nothing seems likely to thaw the frost between William and Harry. We thought the Duke of Edinburgh‘s funeral would be a turning point, it seemed highly likely that the Queen’s funeral would unite the family, and then we had the coronation.

“None of these once-in-a-lifetime events did anything to mend the rift between the brothers. Both boys have remained close to their maternal aunts, and they all came together to unveil the statue of Diana three years ago. The brothers were already at war, but appeared civil…perhaps for the sake of their aunts."

As well as being an uncle of William and Harry, Lord Fellowes also worked as private secretary to the late Queen during some of the most dramatic times during the 1990s. He advised the former monarch through her annus horribilis in 1992 when the marriages of Charles and Diana and Fergie and Andrew broke down and a fire engulfed Windsor Castle.

He was also in the role when his sister-in-law Diana at the age of 36 died following a car crash in Paris in 1997. He was part of her small trusted group of advisors, who guided the Royal Family during the turbulent time and according to The Times, which ran his obituary, helped to write the speech Elizabeth II gave to the nation from Buckingham Palace on the eve of Diana's funeral.

His role of being a palace courtier meant he often had a strained relationship with his sister-in-law, but when she died suddenly, he said: "I was deeply fond of her. She was a very good person. She found it difficult in life to find happiness, and I'm sad for people who have that situation."

His position meant that he was depicted in the hit Netflix series, The Crown, where he was played by Andrew Havill and he remained an extra equerry to the late Queen until her death in 2022. He died last Monday from undisclosed causes. As well as leaving behind wife Jane, he is also survived by their three children - Laura, Alexander and Eleanor, who are all cousins of William and Harry.
