Sinead O'Connor fans want a waxwork of the iconic singer in Madame Tussauds in London.

A controversial figure unveiled at the National Museum of Wax was pulled after 24 hours this week in the wake of a litany of complaints.

Objectors included the Nothing Compares 2 U singer’s brother Joseph O’Connor who described the life-sized waxwork as “hideous”. Others likened it to a Thunderbirds caricature. Sinead died from natural causes on July 26, 2003, aged 56.

Now fans on the Sinead O’Connor: Survivor Facebook page say they have written to Madame Tussauds pleading for an intervention.

One said: “We believe Sinead should be recognised, and... have nudged Madame Tussauds about the figure.

“We wish to have a say about the figure and the pose. We of course cannot say Madame Tussauds will even undertake such a project but we believe they should try.” Another fan wrote: “That would be amazing and even more so if we get the chance to be involved in what pose is used.”

A third superfan added: “I want Sinead to be honoured as she deserves.” On Friday, the National Wax Museum said it was withdrawing its wax figure of Sinead O’Connor and launching a new project “to create a more accurate representation” of the singer.

Museum director Paddy Dunning – a long-time close friend of the singer – admitted they “can do better” and the image “did not meet our high standards or the expectations of Sinead’s devoted fans”.

The Mandinka singer’s brother John O’Connor said if people wanted to honour his sister’s memory then a statue should be erected in Dublin.
