The 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony had viewers' jaws dropping as a headless Marie Antoinette was seen jamming in an electrifying performance.

Following the unveiling of a Louis Vuitton medal trunk with a lively dance act, the word "Liberte" splashed across the screen in a nod to the English term for liberty. The focus then narrowed to a beheaded Marie crooning, which transitioned to a haunting scene featuring multiple Maries peering from castle windows set to the beat of heavy metal.

Audience members were left astounded watching an act of the former French queen, who ruled between 1774 and 1793, belt out tunes against a backdrop of ferocious metal riffs.

Social media users couldn't contain their excitement over what they were seeing, with one observer on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying: "A beheaded Marie Antoinette is one of the wildest and craziest things ever at the Olympics #Olympics #OpeningCeremony."

Another commented: "Give the singing beheaded Marie Antoinette all the medals #Olympics #OpeningCeremony," while a third remarked: "Yup! Just casually throw a guillotined Marie Antoinette into the #Olympics #OpeningCeremony Gotta hand it to The French."

A fourth also added: "Marie Antoinette followed by @GojiraMusic was probably the most metal thing I've seen on an #Olympics broadcast. Awesome. #OpeningCeremony #Paris2024."

French rockers Gojira made history as the first hard rock band to perform at an Olympic Games opening ceremony, delivering a metal rendition of Ah! Ca Ira, a song synonymous with the French Revolution.

The ceremony also saw Celine Dion perform for the first time in four years as she belted out Édith Piaf's Hymne A L'Amour from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Celine had stayed out of the limelight for a number of years as it came to light she has been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome.

The spotlight is firmly on gymnastics superstar Katie Ledecky at this year's Games as she returns to the Olympic stage following her decision to prioritise her mental health during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, which saw her withdraw after underperforming.

Swimming sensation Katie Ledecky is another athlete to watch closely this year, with her speed in the pool rivalling that of Michael Phelps. She's already making waves and looks set to cement her place in sporting history.
