A fundraiser has been launched for an “adventurous” young Irish man hospitalised in the UK following a horrific bike accident.

Anthony O’Carroll, a 27-year-old mechanic from Ballyduff in Kerry, was seriously injured in a motorbike accident on the Isle of Man. The young man was rushed to Nobles Hospital and then airlifted to Walton Centre for Neuroscience in Liverpool due to the multiple injuries sustained during the crash.

He has since been a patient in ICU, having initially been maintained in an induced coma and intubated. The Kerryman suffered broken bones which will require future surgical procedures, as well as significant head trauma following the accident.

Anthony is the only child of his adoring parents Mary and Neilus, who flew from Ireland to be with their son. His father is still recovering from an illness last year.

A third-generation motor mechanic, Anthony has been described as having a “real zest for life” with an “infectious smile” and a love for motorbikes, having come from a family who are respected in the motor trade.

At the moment Anthony is unconscious and will require a lot of rehabilitation care in the future. The young man did not have insurance so a fundraiser has been launched to help cover the cost of his medical needs for now.

“Anthony is a strong, bright, kind and caring young man and is very well respected in our community,” a post on GoFundMe read.

“He always encourages himself to do his best with everything he does such as work, racing, and helping where he can, and knowing the competitive streak going through his body he most certainly is doing that right now.

“Since the news of Anthony’s crash, a significant amount of support has been shown to both family and friends and on behalf of us all, we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone during this challenging time.

“Anthony and his family need everyone’s help now more than ever, Please help support him and his parent through this difficult time.

“Money received will help alleviate the financial costs of Neilus and Mary’s stay in Liverpool, and to finance Anthony’s future rehab. All donations big or small every cent will be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate please just share this page with your friends and family to help spread the word.”

So far, the GoFundMe has raised a massive €30,764, surpassing the initial €30,000 target. To donate, head here.
