Oliver Callan has revealed why he had to take a couple of weeks off work recently.

RTE presenter Maura Derrane filled in for the comedian on his RTE Radio 1 slot for the last few weeks, and on Monday morning, Oliver returned to the airwaves to explain the reason for his absence.

Oliver said: "What happened was, like thousands of us, with our Irish skin, I got one of those mild skin cancers. A basal cell carcinoma. It doesn't spread to your body, so not that scary, but it has to be surgically removed.

"Mine is located on the face, which is a precious place when suddenly someone comes at you with a scalpel, just between the edge of my nose and corner of my lips. I couldn't talk properly, or indeed I was told not to laugh out loud for the last two weeks or I'd end up with a nasty, nasty scar.

"Fortunately there wasn't a lot to smile about while I was gone, what with all of the American carnage and all that trouble over the immigration element of our housing disaster. But look, I'm back now. I did lots of research work for the show and I read some upcoming books from authors we'll be meeting over the rest of the summer."

Oliver jokingly added: "I've also started growing a moustache because I can't shave at the scar yet. As a result, I look like an inept sidekick of a provincial detective in a 1980s southern ITV drama. That's the look I'm going for."

The radio presenter thanked Maura and his team at Radio 1 before continuing on with the rest of the programme.

"So thank you Maura, thank you to the team for their patience while I was out, so soon into a job that is still relatively new, it is to me anyway."
