IKEA has urgently recalled a popular item over fears it could burn users. Almost 500 of them have been sold throughout Ireland.

A popular IKEA item sold to hundreds of customers in Ireland has been urgently recalled over safety fears.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) issued an alert on Friday for certain types of IKEA’s VARMFRONT power banks. Safety chiefs found that the power bank could go on fire and may burn users.

A CCPC spokesperson explained: “IKEA is carrying out a recall on the VARMFRONT power banks. The risk presented by this product is fire. This may result in burns to consumers."

Around 498 of these power banks have been sold throughout Ireland.

The affected products are:

  • The power bank capacity is 5200 mAh. The product is blue. The article number is 70555647, with date stamp [YEAR/WEEK] 2318, 2319 or 2322.
  • The power bank capacity is 10400 mAh. The product is dark blue. The article number is 10555645, with date stamp [YEAR/WEEK] 2313, 2316, 2318 or 2319.

Anyone who has the power bank at home is advised to stop using it immediately and contact IKEA for a replacement or a refund.

The CCPC added: “Consumers are advised to stop using the product and to contact IKEA . Consumers can return their power bank to any IKEA store for a replacement or full refund. Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required. Consumers can also contact IKEA on 01 696 6246 or visit www.ikea.com/ie for further information.”

An IKEA spokesperson apologised for any inconvenience.They said: “IKEA urges all customers who own a VARMFRONT power bank 5200 mAh, blue (article number 70555647, with date stamp [YEAR/WEEK] 2318, 2319 or 2322) or VARMFRONT power bank 10400 mAh, dark blue (article number 10555645, with date stamp 2313, 2316, 2318 or 2319) to immediately stop using it and contact IKEA for a replacement or full refund.

“Certain VARMFRONT power banks may pose a fire safety risk, due to a manufacturing error. This error is isolated to units with the before-mentioned date-stamps.

“At IKEA, the health and safety of our customers is our top priority, therefore these products are being recalled. Customers can return their power bank to any IKEA store for a replacement or full refund. Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required. Customers can also contact IKEA on 01 696 6246 for further information. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
