A Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Dublin Airport on Thursday due to a technical issue with the aircraft's engine.

Flight FR1746 departed Milan Bergamo shortly before 5pm local time and was en route to Knock Airport when crew sounded the 7700 squawk code while flying over Wales.

A Squawk 7700 alert code indicates an emergency onboard the aircraft and may be issued due to technical, environmental, or medical issues that results in an emergency situation.

Aviation enthusiast Shaun's Aviation reported the plane experienced "strong vibrations in the left hand side engine", leading the crew to run the engine on idle. This meant that for a short period, the plane was being powered by only one engine.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 8200 Gamechanger, was forced to divert to Dublin Airport, where it landed safely at around 6.20pm.

The plane was met on the runway by engineers and an inspection was carried out on the aircraft.

Ryanair confirmed to Dublin Live that a replacement aircraft was arranged to bring passengers from Dublin to Knock. This flight took off at 8.45pm.

A Ryanair spokeswoman said: "This flight from Milan to Knock (18 July) diverted to Dublin due to a minor technical issue with the aircraft. The aircraft landed normally and was taken for inspection by engineers.

"To minimise disruption to passengers, a replacement aircraft was quickly arranged to continue this flight from Dublin to Knock, which departed at 20.45 local."
